The Mustang created the Pony Car class of American automobiles, and in 1964 were launch priced at an average of $ 2 800.00 (R 30 000.00) and some change, with some extra options available for $ 371.00 (R 4 000.00).

It sold over 22,000 units in the first day and more than one million in two years, becoming one of the most successful product launches in automotive history. Since 1964, more than 9.2 million Mustangs would be produced and sold, most of them originating close to Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, USA.

The first models came with 4 different ranges of power. Starting with the base 101 – horsepower, 170 – cubic inch six cylinder to the 4 barrel 289 cubic inch High Performance V-8 with 271 horsepower. The vehicle identification number for the first – ever Mustang was 5F08F100001.

First models rolled off the line in March – just in time for dealers to stock showrooms for the April 1964 unveiling. Over its lifetime, the Mustang has been many things, a fashionable boulevard cruiser, an asphalt ripping muscle car, a purpose built road racer, and stylish daily transportation for millions of buyers.

The next chapter in the life of the iconic pony car - 6 Generations later, with the all-new 2015, launching end of 2014, will boast a 3.7 litre V6, and a 5 litre V8, loaded with innovative technologies and delivering world-class levels of performance.
